Yin Gardens

more than a park

Centre seating designed for social interaction and encourages engagement and conversation.

The Glenferrie Yin Gardens is a space which provides the community with a meditative sanctuary, blending architecture and water design to encourage meditative practices and movements throughout the busy lives of the community members.

Located in the heart of Hawthorn, breaching the gap between residential and commercial properties to provide a safe haven for relaxation, the gardens are your escape from the outside world. Sitting at 1,250 square meters of enclosed communal parklands, the gardens have a covered shelter which provides protection from the elements, as well as access to running water, nature and ample communal activity space.

The gardens are designed to focus around the practice of meditative movement, whether that is yoga, meditation, walking, tai chi or simply sitting amongst the elements. Inside the gardens is a single building which is surrounding by curving masonry, encouraging movement, interaction and providing a space which can be used for multiple activities.

Glenferrie Yin Gardens is more than a park, it is a space which has been designed to calm the senses through the incorporation and design influence of water and its fluid movements. Surround yourself amongst the elements and take a moment or two out of your busy day to unwind, ground and channel your energy to better your mental health by finding the relaxing state that the park provides.

Creating a space isn't just about the architectural design, it's also about the materials that are used and how they contribute to the story.

For this assignment, I built my materials board around the concept of copper. This was because of its ability to change and adapt over time, as a living material it has the uniqueness that simple steel or stone may not have.

Floor Plan - Concept: Fluidity of water, incorporation of curved walls and open spaces

Designed with minimal corners and connecting walls, the Glenferrie Yin Gardens have been sculpted around the use of water and it's ability to twist and turn to create new spaces and experiences.
